Houston Apologists FC

Houston 1836 is reportedly no more, adding another chapter in a long history of retarded decisions by MLS. They make it really hard to be a fan. It's Valentine's Day, and we have to put up with more crap than any girlfriend or boyfriend ever. And it's not like we can just break up and find someone else, oh no. We have to stick around and try to change them. Yeah, that always works. Here's my email to mlsnet:

Hey,

I just heard that you guys are going to change the name of the team. That is beyond pathetic. Do you really think that this is going to win you any more fans? It's not like hispanic fans will come out to games just because of a different name. Any fans who were offended aren't going to just forget what happened. And now, you're offending the people who weren't offended before by flip-flopping. It's a PR disaster, and complete minor league stuff. There has always been something to be embarrassed about as an MLS fan (shootouts, high school stadiums, football lines, playing during World Cup, etc), and this is another addition to the list.

(On a positive note today, MLS announced some rules changes. Nothing big, but they were long overdue.)

A few thoughts.
1) In five years (probably 5 months) nobody will care about name change in Houston.
2) If the MLS cares so much about Hispanic, Latino, Mexican-American fans why do they constantly imitate European and not Mexican or Latin American naming conventions? Also, why don't they hire Hispanic broadcasters to do play by play or color on TV? They could not be worse or less knowledgeable than the current cast.
3) Sending the team with the most points in league play (and possibly the second most) to the CCC makes less sense without a balanced schedule. For instance last year, west team each had 8 games against expansion teams and East teams had only 4.

Forgot to mention this above. The best name I have seen for the MLS team in Houston so far is Hooventus. I know it is still a little European, but I like it.

Doesn't really matter what they go with now, they've just succeeded in pissing everyone off.

So what did Marcelo Balboa do to get his Hispanic license revoked?

Personally I wasn't that enamored with the name (36ers would have been better, IMO) but the caving in to the potential sponsors caving in (which is really what casued the brouhaha to get this far) was disapointing. I hope the supporters groups of PC Houston keep the year 1836 alive in a rude and obnoxious manner.

Viva FC 2-0!

Anon above:
1) Maybe, maybe not.
2a) CHIVAS USA...?
2b) Well, I'm sure the spanish radio broadcast of DC United games is a hispanic individual. Let alone the english broadcast. Isn't that more of an individual team concern?
3) As someone who's team could potentially be put at a disadvantage due to the unbalanced schedule, I still welcome the new rules on CCC qualifications.

On one hand, being at a university with an *offensive* nickname and all, changing the name before it gets totally out of hand makes sense.

On the other hand, didn't they do any market research or talk to anyone in the community before they went off announcing the name and logo? Like McDuh...

So Anon, you're saying that a true Hispanic worth listening to doesn't have ties or loyalties to the USMNT? Got it.

You know, if fans really like 1836 as the team name, all they have to do is call it that. No one's stopping them. Personally, I simply find the flip-flopping hilarious.

Native American nicknames have no other connotations, though. 1836 has different meanings to each group, and it's stupid that they have to worry about all of them.
